why we use decarboxy carnosine hcl
What is Decarboxy Carnosine HCl?
Decarboxy Carnosine HCl, commonly known as carcinine, is a synthetic derivative of the naturally occurring dipeptide carnosine.
Carnosine, composed of beta-alanine and histidine, is naturally found in muscle and brain tissues. Its downfall is that it is prone to enzymatic degradation by carnosinase, limiting its effectiveness in topical applications.
To enhance its stability and efficacy, carnosine undergoes decarboxylation (removal of the carboxyl group) to form carcinine. Therefore, the active is made more resistant to enzymatic breakdown and suitable for skincare formulations.1
Skin Benefits of Decarboxy Carnosine HCl
Decarboxy Carnosine HCl is a multifunctional peptide known for its antioxidant, anti-glycation, and skin-brightening effects. By targeting oxidative stress, inflammation, and structural degradation, it helps maintain skin resilience and a healthy, vibrant appearance. Its protective properties support skin health over time, making it a valuable ingredient in anti-ageing and brightening skincare formulations.
Antioxidant Properties
Decarboxy Carnosine HCl exhibits strong antioxidant activity by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by environmental stressors like UV radiation and pollution. By neutralising these free radicals, it helps protect skin cells from oxidative damage, reducing inflammation and contributing to the maintenance of youthful, healthy skin.1
Anti-Glycation Effects
Glycation is a non-enzymatic process in which sugars bind to proteins like collagen and elastin, leading to the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). These AGEs compromise the skin's structural integrity, resulting in reduced elasticity and visible wrinkles. Decarboxy Carnosine HCl inhibits the formation of AGEs, preserving skin firmness and preventing premature signs of ageing.1, 2
Skin Brightening
Oxidative stress and glycation contribute to dullness and uneven skin tone. By reducing these factors, Decarboxy Carnosine HCl helps brighten the complexion and improve skin clarity. Its ability to prevent glycation-induced discolouration and protect against oxidative damage results in a more radiant, even skin tone.1
Anti-Inflammatory Properties
In addition to its antioxidant and anti-glycation functions, Decarboxy Carnosine HCl has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-8, helping to soothe irritated skin and alleviate redness.1, 3
Photoprotection
Decarboxy Carnosine HCl also contributes to photoprotection by neutralising free radicals generated by UV exposure. This activity helps prevent photodamage, reducing the risk of sun-induced ageing and maintaining the skin's overall health.1
