why we use dextran
The Basics
Dextran is a naturally derived polysaccharide created through the fermentation of sugars, typically by Leuconostocbacteria. This process transforms simple sugars into a complex carbohydrate composed of glucose units, giving dextran its unique ability to retain moisture and form protective films on the skin. Originally discovered in medical applications for its biocompatibility, dextran has made its way into skincare for its gentle, hydrating, and skin-soothing properties. Its biodegradable nature and excellent skin compatibility make it a valuable addition to modern cosmetic formulations.1
Skin Benefits of Dextran
Dextran in skincare functions as a humectant, attracting and locking in moisture to keep the skin hydrated and supple. Its film-forming properties create a lightweight, breathable barrier that helps reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and reinforces the skin’s natural protective barrier. Additionally, dextran has soothing, anti-inflammatory effects, calming irritated skin and reducing redness—making it ideal for sensitive skin types. When combined with antioxidant compounds, dextran helps stabilise these ingredients, enhancing protection against environmental stressors and promoting a brighter, healthier complexion.2
