why we use glycine soja (soybean) sterols
The Basics
Soybean Sterols are plant-derived compounds that mimic the structure and function of cholesterol in the skin. Yes, cholesterol in skin is a good thing. Cholesterol is a critical component of the skin’s lipid matrix, making up about 25% of the stratum corneum lipids, where it works alongside ceramides and free fatty acids to maintain the skin barrier’s integrity. Cholesterol, and therefore phytosterols like those from soy, play a key role in maintaining the skin’s lipid balance, reinforcing the barrier, and improving resilience against environmental stressors. By reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), they help maintain long-term skin hydration and elasticity.1
What Soybean Sterols do for Skin
Soybean sterols contribute to overall skin comfort by enhancing moisture retention and supporting lipid replenishment. Their emollient properties help improve skin smoothness, making them particularly beneficial in formulations designed for dry or sensitive skin.2
Rich in naturally occurring antioxidants, soybean sterols help protect against oxidative stress, which can contribute to visible signs of skin aging. Their ability to support lipid renewal makes them valuable in skincare formulations that focus on restoring and maintaining skin health.3
