why we use tetrahydropiperine
Origin and Production
Tetrahydropiperine (THP) is a natural compound extracted from black pepper (Piper nigrum) fruit. It is synthesised through the hydrogenation of piperine, the primary alkaloid responsible for black pepper’s pungency.
This process of creating THP involves dissolving piperine in a protic solvent, such as ethanol, followed by hydrogenation, yielding a more stable, bioavailable derivative—Tetrahydropiperine.1
Due to its enhanced solubility and stability, THP is widely used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications to improve the penetration and efficacy of active ingredients.
Penetration-Enhancing Properties
Tetrahydropiperine is renowned for its ability to enhance dermal absorption, making it a powerful bioenhancer in skincare and haircare formulations. By modulating the lipid environment of the stratum corneum, it facilitates greater penetration of both water- and oil-soluble actives.
THP works by:
- Temporarily altering skin permeability, allowing actives to penetrate deeper.
- Enhancing bioavailability, increasing the effectiveness of co-administered ingredients.
- Extending the duration of active ingredient performance, leading to longer-lasting benefits.
Research shows that Tetrahydropiperine significantly enhances transdermal drug absorption, making it a key ingredient in optimising the efficacy of skincare formulations.2
A key addition in Scalp Care
Tetrahydropiperine not only enhances the absorption of active ingredients in skincare but can also play a crucial role in scalp treatments. By improving the delivery of key compounds to the scalp, THP helps:
- Optimise scalp hydration and nourishment, preventing dryness and irritation.
- Create a balanced scalp environment, reducing excess oiliness or flaking.
- Improve conditions for healthier hair growth, ensuring nutrients reach the follicles.
By improving ingredient delivery and bioavailability, THP elevates the performance of both skin and scalp treatments, helping to get the most out of our active ingredients.
